Warehouse of Stolen Goods Found Thanks to GPS Tracking

28 Nov 2018

For months, vehicles, tools and landscaping equipment continued to go missing in the city of Chicago. The Chicago Police Department worked tirelessly to crack the case, but the suspect continued to elude officers. On October 24, the department got a major break in the case when a victimized citizen called in to report he had been targeted for burglary. Chicago police were able to follow GPS tracking information straight to stolen goods.

The victim, whose vehicle had been stolen, told police officers that he used a GPS tracking device in his car. The empowered victim told the officers that he was able to turn on the device.

He followed the GPS tracker directly to his car at a specific warehouse on the West Side of the city. Police immediately responded to the tip. When they arrived on scene, they noticed several stolen cars. The department promptly requested a search warrant for the warehouse.

Items Discovered in the Warehouse

Incredibly, the police force was able to successfully recover over 140 stolen items in the warehouse alone. The items recovered include:

  • Pressure washers
  • Three motorcycles
  • Trailers
  • Vehicles
  • Power saws
  • Chainsaws
  • Air nail guns
  • Rotary hammer drill
  • Reciprocating saw
  • Power drill
  • Battery operated saw
  • Welder
  • Vacuum cleaners
  • Compound miter saw
  • Air compressor
  • Battery operated light
  • Generator
  • Power grinder
  • An engraved sword

These various items were displayed at the 10th District at 3315 W. Ogden Avenue on Thursday and Friday. The overall value of the combined items is about $100,000 according to an estimate created by the Chicago Police Department’s Major Auto Theft Unit.

Individuals hoping to reclaim their stolen property should bring a police report number, identification and any other type of information regarding the ownership of the various items.

One victim, the owner of a landscaping company, received a call from the police department about items that were stolen from his property back in August. Police noticed that some of the equipment had the victim’s name, phone number and information engraved into the sides, so they quickly reached out to the appropriate owner. Nearly $1,000 worth of equipment was returned to him.
