NICB Releases Top States and Top Months for Heavy Equipment Theft
4 Jul 2016In 2014, a report released by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) on heavy equipment thefts, illustrates that this type of theft is a growing problem in the United States. The report, which was created with the assistance of the National Equipment Register (NER,) used data provided by law enforcement agencies regarding the thefts of this type of equipment, including the states and the cities where the thefts occurred, as well as the months when thefts were most prevalent.

The state where the most heavy equipment thefts occurred was Texas. In 2014, there were a total of 11,625 heavy equipment thefts reported in this state. North Carolina had the second highest heavy equipment theft rate, where a total of 918 thefts were reported. With 915 reported, Florida ranked third, followed by South Carolina, where 660 thefts of this nature were documented by law enforcement agencies.
The NICB report also highlighted the months of the year when heavy equipment thefts were the greatest. It’s perhaps not surprising that the highest number of heavy equipment thefts occurred during the summer.
According to the report, the most thefts occurred in July, 2014, when a total of 1,258 thefts took place. In June, 2014, 1,222 thefts of this nature were reported, making it the second most active month for this type of crime. The third most active month for this type of crime was August of 2014, when a total of 1,201 heavy equipment thefts were reported to law enforcement agencies. Crime activity occurs throughout the year, but it narrowly decreased during the late fall and winter months.
Heavy Equipment Theft by Manufacturer and Model Year
Heavy equipment manufactured by John Deere was the prime target of theft, according to the NICB report, though this is not the only manufacturer that was targeted. Highest heavy equipment theft by manufacturer:
- John Deere
- Kubota Tractor Corp
- Bobcat
- Caterpillar
- Toro
The report also illustrated the model year of equipment that was stolen.
- 2,130 pieces of equipment were manufactured in 2014
- 1,440 pieces of equipment were manufactured in 2013
- 1,104 pieces of equipment were manufactured in 2012
The number of thefts for earlier model years was much lower: 695 pieces of equipment made in 2011 were stolen; 654 pieces of equipment made in 2010 were stolen, and 581 pieces of equipment made in 2008 were stolen.
