Sadly, two teens were involved in two different serious car accidents recently in Ohio. One accident in Preble County involved a 16-year-old who has killed in the accident and the other involved a teen in Centerville who flipped their car.

Investigators said the cause of both accidents was that both teens were driving at high speeds on slick roads. No matter what your experience is with driving, you need to be extra cautious when driving on slick roads in the wintertime, according to Ohio State Patrol.

The 17-year-old teen in Centerville was lucky tobe alive after flipping his car the other night near Wilmington Pike and I-675. He came out of the accident with no injuries. But, Wyatt Clevenger wasn’t so lucky as the 16-year-old died in the fatal accident on Wayne Trace Rd in Preble County. According to police, he hit a guardrail after running off the road.

A lot of problems could be avoided if people would just take their time when driving and slow down Sergeant Simmons commented. And, parents need to step in and helpless experienced drivers.

said they just hope parents will sit down with their teens or even go out with them and teach them how to drive on snow covered roads.

So, what can parents do?

First, know the facts surrounding teenage driving. Some teens:

  • Speed
  • Have peers as passengers
  • Drink and drive
  • Drive at night
  • Drive distracted

All these things increase their already high risk of accidents.

Parents should be good coaches. As a parent, you need to set clear expectations for dangerous driving behaviors ― like those above and stay calmas you reinforce them.

Practice regularly with your teen driving in harsh climates. Ensure there’s an emergency kit in the vehicle at all times.

And, you may want to invest in a GPS vehicle tracking and locator device. Should something happen and your teen does get involved in an accident, you’ll want to be able to get to them as quickly as possible. GPS tracking for teen drivers will give you instant data on the whereabouts of the vehicle at all times, allowing you to track down your teen.

You need to stay pro-active and involved as a parent of a newly-minted teen driver. Monitor your teenager’s driving behavior, even after they’ve obtained their license. Continue coaching them about safe driving as it takes time, judgment, skill, and experience to learn how to safely drive, especially in the winter. Shaun Redman, a resident of Memphis, was enjoying a night out with his family and his son’s baseball team when the unexpected occurred. Redman and his group finished their meal at a local Chili’srestaurant and left the building to find that their vehicle was missing. The family’s 2007 Chevy Trailblazer had been stolen in broad daylight near the Wolfchase Galleria shopping center. Redman immediately reached out to the police for help.

While the family waited for law enforcement to arrive, they were able to speak with one of the shopping center’s security guards. The guard allowed the family to view the surveillance footage of the parking lot. Redman watched as his family exited his car. Within three minutes of entering into Chili’s, the thieves were already popping the lock of the Trailblazer and making their escape. The theft happened so quickly that it’s doubtful any witnesses even realized what was happening.

Thankfully, Redman’s Trailblazer was equipped with a GPS tracking device. When police arrived on the scene, he quickly informed the officers that they could easily ascertain the car’s whereabouts by using the new technology. It didn’t take the officers long to utilize the tracking technology to locate the vehicle near old highway 78. The car’s location was pinging its signal near an old industrial building.

Officers coordinated a stakeout in an attempt to lay eyes on the stolen vehicle. Once they arrived at the industrial building, they witnessed several other vehicles, trailers, engines, transmissions, and various other vehicle parts nearby the Trailblazer.

On December 4th, police returned to the property to speak with the owner, Kelsey Jones. She gave the officers permission to look through the property. Officers quickly located the stolen Trailblazer along with three other vehicles that had been completely stripped. After running the vehicle’s tags, police confirmed that all three had also been stolen. Jones, the property owner, was apprehended by police. She is currently being charged with four counts of theft and violating the chop shop law.

Redman was thrilled the police were able to quickly locate, track down and recover his property. Redman and the police both believe locating the car and suspect would have been very unlikely without the use of the GPS tracking technology. GPS trackers in vehicles have consistently proven to be a great solution when locating stolen vehicles, and Redman is strongly encouraging other citizens to purchase this new technology.
