Giraffes have long, elegant necks. You’d expect that these would be perfect for attaching GPS trackers to. But, not so. The collars fall right off when the animals lean down to take a drink. Partners and scientists from Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) are trying out a new collar design to combat this problem.
GPS collars were secured around the ossicones (the horn-like structures on top of the heads) of 11 reticulated giraffes in Kenya back in June 2017. These are reporting back hourly information with regards to their location on a daily basis. The Friends of the National Zoo’s Conservation Nation program are funding the GPS trackers with the support of donors.
The study brings together various bodies. Namely, San Diego Zoo Global, SCBI’s Conservation Ecology Center, Senckenberg BiK-F, Smithsonian’s Global Health Program, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya Wildlife Services, Loisaba Conservancy, Giraffe Conservation Foundation, The Nature Conservancy and the Northern Rangelands Trust. GPS Tracking for Electric Cars
25 Jul 2017
Electric cars offer many benefits to the planet and the people who drive them. Among those benefits are fewer emissions, a step away from reliance on fossil fuels, and greatly reduced operating expenses over traditional fuel-burning vehicles – even hybrids. As more people are making the investment in electric cars, we are seeing a need for GPS tracking to help maximize and protect your investment. These are a few ways GPS tracking for electric cars can benefit you.
24/7 Monitoring of Your Vehicle
Because GPS car tracking allows you to set perimeters for your vehicle you can receive instant notifications if it is moved outside of its designated area even when you are sleeping. Why is this important? Unlike traditional vehicles, electric cars make little noise. You won’t be able to rely on your ears to alert you that your car has been cranked or moved. Also, if your car is stolen, you know as soon as it leaves your designated area rather than finding out later. This aids in the swift recovery of your electric vehicle. Read the rest of this entry »

African elephants are still declining due to two main historical factors: changes in land use and the high demand for ivory. Today, these two factors are still threatening the existence of the species. And, although there’s been a ban already on international trading of ivory, there are still a large number of African elephants being poached.
Each year, tens of thousands of the elephants are killed for their ivory tusks so that the ivory can be carved into jewelry and ornaments. These products are quite popular with China being their largest consumer market. Read the rest of this entry »
