Protect Your Vehicle with the “Four Layers of Protection”
NICB suggests you follow these four protection layers to protect your vehicle from being stolen:
- Apply common sense: Close and lock your doors and windows, remove keys from the vehicle’s ignition and park in areas that are well-lit.
- Use a warning device: Choose vehicles with audible or visible devices like brake locks, VIN etching, steering column collars, theft-deterrent decals, wheel locks, brake pedal and steering wheel lock and more.
- Install an immobilizing device: Choose vehicles with immobilizing devices that prevent thieves from bypassing the vehicle’s ignition and hot-wiring the vehicle. These include fuse cut-offs, smart keys, kill switches, fuel pump, starter and ignition disablers and wireless ignition authentication.
- Use a GPS tracking device: Protect your vehicle with a tracking device that sends a signal to police when your vehicle is stolen. GPS tracking devices can track your vehicle via computer and help police recover your stolen vehicle.
If you must buy one of these “most stolen” vehicles, be sure you guard against theft by following these above four layers of protection.
