GPS Tracking Device Used in Heroin Drug Bust

4 Oct 2016

Thanks to GPS tracking, authorities have been able to prevent hundreds of thousands of dollars of heroin off of Reading, PA streets.

A package that was delivered to Jose Guzman-Cabello and Jose Fernandez-Avalos, which originated in Mexico and was sent to Reading, was intercepted by the police. Inside the package was a kilogram of heroin, which the pair intended to sell, as reported by the John Adams, the District Attorney for Berks County. Mr. Adams said that Guzman-Cabello and Fernandez-Avalos are facing possession and possession with intent to deliver charges.

According to the authorities, the heroin packaged, which was headed to Reading, was being inspected in Cincinnati, OH, and while it was being inspected, authorities noticed that something was off. According to Adams, the package manifest indicated that there was $10 worth of chocolate and cake pans inside the package; however, an X-ray revealed that what the manifest said, and what was actually inside the package were two different things.

Aware of the discrepancies, the authorities outfitted the package with a GPS tracker before allowing it to be processed to its destination in the 300 block of North Eighth Street in Reading, PA.

The suspects were located in a car when the package arrived. When they received it and opened it, the GPS device was activated and the two men were swiftly arrested and brought up on the aforementioned charges: Possession of heroin, and possession of heroin with the intent to sell.

It is estimated that street value of the package of heroin, which weighed a kilo, was $330,000. Adams indicated that the heroin could have been broken down and split up into thousands of doses, which means that it could have extensively infiltrated the community of Reading, and beyond. Each of the suspects are in the United States illegally. This means that if they are convicted of the crimes they have been charged with, they will do their time in the United States, and then there is a possibility that they will face deportation.

Candice Frias, a neighbor of Guzman-Cabello and Fernandez-Avalos, said that she feels horrible that the two had possession of and were planning on selling the heroin, but she is relieved that the authorities are cleaning up the streets in Reading.
