Cutting Ambulance Response Time Via GPS Tracking Technology

28 Oct 2015

Those who work in emergency services know better than anyone the huge role ambulance response times can play in a life or death situation. When someone is in danger, when their life is on the line, every minute matters when it comes to the response of medical teams.

From the time a call is placed to 911, the first response medical team is on the clock. Finding the fastest route and arriving on the scene as quickly as possible could make all the difference in whether a patient lives or dies.

Because of this, more cities are relying on GPS fleet tracking technology as a means of cutting ambulance response times in emergency situations. Advancements in technology are believed to be the key in improving these response times and improving the outcomes of emergency situations.

Jersey City, for instance, already has an average six minute ambulance response time, one of the fastest in the country. Still, they believe the use of gps tracking technology will play a role in cutting that time in half, and saving more lives as a result.

How exactly does gps tracking technology improve ambulance response times? There are two big ways GPS has been found to help first response medical teams to arrive on scene faster than ever before:

#1. Locating the closest emergency vehicle: In situations where GPS tracking   technology is not being used, a 911 call is routed by dispatchers to the usual ambulance hub for that county. However, with the use of GPS tracking technologies, dispatchers can locate the closest ambulance to the scene, allowing officials to respond quickly to the emergency.

#2. Providing accurate directions to the scene: Many emergency officials have previously relied on memory to drive the ambulance to the scene of the emergency. Through the use of GPS tracking technology, drivers can now use the most accurate and up to date directions to avoid detours, construction, or traffic, and arrive on scene quicker than before.

Today, many counties are involved in trial runs with GPS tracking technology software in hopes of improving response times through real-time tracking of emergency vehicles through locating the closest emergency vehicle and getting the quickest route to the scene. Many emergency officials believe if emergency vehicles are equipped with GPS tracking technology this will allow emergency officials to arrive on scene quicker than before and save lives as a result.
