Teen Driving Statistics

22 Apr 2019

The statistics surrounding teen driivng accidents, injuries and death are alarming.  Every hour, around 30 teenagers become injured in a vehicle crash that involves an inexperienced driver, reports the National Safety Council. Seven will die each day in these crashes.

Vehicle crashes are the top cause of young adult fatalities and the numbers are increasing. Teenage drivers are almost three times more likely to be in a fatal crash than drivers 20 years old or older. These are just some startling statistics on teen driving by the National Safety Council.

Other statistics are:

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety conducted research showing drivers between 16 and 17 years old are nine times more likely than adults to be involved in a vehicle accident and six times more likely than adults to be involved in a deadly crash.

Steps to Reduce These Poor Statistics

The National Safety Council has been involved for a long time trying to reduce the number of teenage driver vehicle crashes. Risk-taking behavior coupled with inexperience means an increased risk of teen driver crashes. Although driver education classes and graduated driving licensing systems help a great deal, teenagers still require additional guidance and training to improve decision-making skills and change risky behaviors.

Alive at 25

One highly interactive program is the NSC’s Alive at 25, which is a two-hour online course to teach teenagers and young adults how to make respectful, safe and legal driving decisions..  You can learn more about the Alive at 25 program here, but It’s designed for drivers that are under 25 years old and complements national driver education programs that focus on vehicle handling and laws. Young drivers learn how to take control of circumstances by taking responsibility for their own attitudes, actions and driving behaviors.

A part of the job of a parent is to ensure their teens get the most thorough and comprehensive driving education available. Parents of young drivers learn from this two-hour online course how to identify risks their teenagers could face and provide practical solutions for keeping them safe. The National Safety Council encourages parents to join in and participate in every aspect of their teenage driver’s journey.

GPS Teen Tracking

Parents can consider utilizing a GPS teen tracking solution to monitor their teen’s driving, especially when they first begin driving. With a GPS tracking for teens device, parents can receive text alerts to let them know if their teen is speeding or driving outside of set boundaries.
