What is the Road to Zero Program?

3 Apr 2019

The Road to Zero program is an educational program designed to eliminate roadway deaths. After several decades of steady declines in roadway deaths, we experienced a large jump in the number of deaths with 5,000 more people being killed in auto roadway accidents in 2016 than in 2011. Thus, the Road to Zero Coalition, managed by the National Safety Council, was born.

According to the RAND Corporation, the coalition has created three primary initiatives to help them achieve their goals of ending traffic fatalities, including:

  1. Double down on things that have proven to be effective evidence-based strategies.
  2. Advance technology in vehicles designed to save lives.
  3. Creating a positive safety culture that prioritizes safety on the roads.

The NSC isn’t only committed to safety on the roads. It also demands safety in aviation, on railways, on waterways, and more. Other organizations that are part of the Road to Zero initiative include The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). While these are important organizations involved in the initiative, they are hardly the entire group of partners involved.

The goal is for everyone on today’s roadways to become active partners in efforts to create a safer environment for everyone.

These are a few things you can do in your business to promote an atmosphere of positive safety in your vehicles and among your drivers.

  1. Create policies that define, outline, and prohibit distracted driving.
  2. Educate employees on what impaired driving is and conditions that could impair driving.
  3. Raise awareness of fatigued driving and the consequences it creates.
  4. Invest in advanced technology for your vehicles to assist drivers with common issues like staying in their lanes, braking assistance, and adaptive cruise control for greater safety.
  5. Install GPS fleet tracking on all your company vehicles to monitor driver behaviors and address actions behind the wheel that go against your organizational policies immediately.
  6. Stay up to date with the maintenance needs of all fleet vehicles so you can eliminate maintenance-related accidents altogether.
  7. Pay attention to vehicle recalls affecting your fleet vehicles and send them in for repairs immediately.

Far too many traffic fatalities are altogether preventable. From proper education about safe driving practices to the ability to enforce your organizational rules related to safe driving (GPS fleet tracking can help with that). You can have a huge role in creating the safety culture your organization needs to do your part on the Road to Zero.

We can help set your company up with a GPS fleet tracking solution in your efforts to contribute to the Road to Zero program. Contact us at 1-888-544-0494 to discuss.
