Many professional athletes — and amateur ones at that — will inevitably be subject to an injury at some point during their athletic career. And some types of sports seem to have more of their share of player injuries than others. Take for example the sport of football — as it called Down Under or soccer, as its called in the USA. Chances are, if you watch one of these games, a player becomes injured before the winner of the match-up is determined.

Whether it is a strained abdominal muscle, torn rotator cuff, or severe ACL injury, 80 percent of these sporting injuries are preventable, according to Raymond Verheijen, exercise physiologist. Verheijen, who is working with Russia’s Euro 2012 national team, recently published a study revealing that player fatigue resulted in a substantial disadvantage in terms of winning. The amount of physical trauma players place on their bodies while playing a game, added to a lack of muscle recovery and rest, arguably can make an athlete more prone to injury from fatigue. The State of Florida is considering attaching GPS tracking devices to motorists’ vehicles to track miles driven. The miles driven would be tied to a tax — a tax-per-mile driven — as opposed to the current fuel-based tax.

As it currently stands, when an individual fuels up his vehicle at a gas station, a portion of that gas price per gallon is allocated to tax, which is revenue the state uses to maintain its bridges and roads. Presently, that fuel tax rate is 59 cents per gallon in Florida. However, with more people purchasing and driving fuel-efficient vehicles coupled with rising fuel economy, the state is collecting less tax. Read the rest of this entry »

Shoes equipped with GPS tracking technology have been used to help monitor Alzheimer’s and dementia patients, and notify caretakers if their loved one ventured beyond a pre-determined area. They’ve also been recently used for parents to keep track of an autistic son or daughter that has a habit of wandering off. Now, it seems, there is a new use for shoes armed with GPS tracking: to help the visually challenged.

Four communication and electronic India-based Srinivas Institute of Technology (SIT) students have developed a novel type of footwear that is beneficial for people who are sight-impaired.

Under the guidance of Satish Kumar, department of electrons and communication’s assistant professor at SIT, Razik P, Sanjay P Nambiar, Sooraj PV and Shravan, have designed a GPS tracking like shoe equipped with global positioning system (GPS) and sensors. Read the rest of this entry »

Money Talks when used as an incentive to slow down while driving

Researchers think they have discovered a new way to motivate motorists to drive within safe driving speeds. Apparently, money talks — and it is just the ticket (pun intended) to get drivers to slow down.

In a study funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), researchers from Old Dominion University, Western Michigan University, NHTSA installed GPS tracking devices in a group of motorists’ cars. The drivers were told that the GPS tracking device would not only monitor and track their driving speed, but also compare it to the posted speed limit for a period of a week.
