America Revealed – Through the Eyes of GPS Tracking

21 Jun 2012

Raju Hossain is a Dominos pizza delivery guy in the heart of New York City. He treks his way through the streets of NYC on his bicycle delivering pizzas to hungry bellies all over the bustling city. His tracks make for stunning imagery, both in static and in motion.

In a show called America Revealed, the creators — PBS — explore the network of the the America’s food chain system through computer animation, aerial photography, and GPS satellite tracking. For its first episode, the creators attached a GPS tracker device to Hossain’s bike to capture his path of pizza delivery one particular Friday night — and his route is transformed into an amazing, “bicycle ballet” that is rather fascinating to watch.

Yet, the non-profit American public broadcasting network is clear to point out the Hossain is part of a much larger food chain, and goes on to show the satellite-tracked refrigerated trucks carrying pizza ingredients like peppers, pizza dough, mushrooms, and tomatoes all across the country. Despite the eco-friendliness of the neighborhood bike messenger delivery guy, the depiction brings up questions (not dug into deeply) of sustainability and protecting our environment. The episode also highlights the complex nature of our nation’s food chain supply system in a fascinating and memorizing way.

If you haven’t heard about the America Revealed series, it’s a compilation of four episodes dissecting different industries in the United States, which in part uses satellite and GPS tracking technology to provide fluorescent blue electricity-imagery of our nation’s movements. The goal is to reveal the inner workings of America and how our country keeps moving with its vast array of transportation systems.

While the first episode of America Revealed focuses on the nation’s food chain, future episodes showcase the transportation, electricity, and manufacturing industries — again with a satellite-tracking and computer animation spin.

Hosted by communication attorney and technology aficionado Yul Kwon — who also won Survivor: Cook Islands in 2006 — viewers of the series will get a unique look — and possibly discover a new perspective — into the hidden patterns of America life that keep us all fed, powered, moving, and supplied with everyday products.
