In less than 30 minutes, a GPS tracking device led to the abduction of a 29-year-old Aurora, Illinois man accused of heisting over $7,000 during a bank robbery over the weekend, authorities report. Law enforcement used a GPS tracker device hidden in the stolen cash to trace the suspect to a nearby gas station, where the man was arrested.

The man — Miguel A. Ramirez — was accused of robbing a PNC Bank local branch at 77 S. Broadway. Ramizez entered the bag in the morning and provided the teller with a withdrawal slip with the word “all the money”. He also pulled out a weapon, which authorities later found out was a BB gun. The teller wasn’t able to understand what was written on the withdrawal form, so Ramirez whispered the words “Give me all your money”. Read the rest of this entry »

Led by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the federal agency tasked with monitoring atmospheric and oceanic conditions, and sponsored by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a global panel of experts has predicted that the next solar cycle — Solar Cycle 24 — will peak in 2013. The 2012 Olympic Games will kick off in just a couple of weeks — on July 27th to be exact. Olympic representatives, city officials, and law enforcement agencies have made not only the safety of visitors to and residents of this UK city a top priority, but the Olympic athletes themselves. Stringent security measures have been put into place, including the use of GPS tracking devices to help keep everyone safe, including from potential terrorist acts.

And it seems like the strict security measures are working. Thanks to a GPS monitoring device, British officials have re-arrested an accused terrorist for repetitively wandering too close to London’s Olympic Park, where many Olympic events and attractions will be held. This year — perhaps more so than any other year — technology will play a larger role in the running of the Olympics, with GPS tracking technology at the forefront.  From maintaining a smooth traffic flow across the pond to keeping over 10,000 athletes safe, GPS tracker devices and technology are being used in the hopes that the 302 events are pulled off without a hitch.
