What is Operation Safe Driver?

7 Dec 2016

Operation Safe Driver was an exercise conducted by various law enforcement agencies throughout North America in which said agencies engaged in heightened instances of safety enforcement for the purpose of reducing unsafe driving practices and behaviors by commercial vehicle drivers. The 2016 event took place between October 16 and October 22.

During Operation Safe Driver, there were heightened instances of traffic enforcement for unsafe driving practices such as:

  • Distracted Driving
  • Failure to Obey Traffic Control Devices
  • Failure to Use Seatbelts
  • Following too Closely
  • Improper Lane Changes
  • Speeding

The purpose is to raise awareness and prevent accidents by changing driver behaviors behind the wheel.

Operation Safe Driver is important because it offers an effective tool for encouraging safer driver practices by drivers of commercial and passenger vehicles. During the 2015 campaign, participating agencies pulled over 21,012 vehicles.

One somewhat surprising statistic from the event was that while commercial motor vehicles accounted for significantly more instances of speeding than passenger vehicle drivers, it was the passenger vehicle drivers who were more likely to receive warning or citation – 27.3 percent of the time compared to only 9.3 percent for commercial drivers.

Make Every Day a Safe Driving Day for Your Fleet

Business owners understand that unsafe driving poses a very real risk to your business. You have policies in place to combat that, but you have generally had to trust that your drivers were following your policies in an effort to keep themselves, other drivers on the road, your cargo, and your reputation safe.

Now you no longer need to rely on hope and faith when it comes to your drivers. Technology has evolved and there are sophisticated GPS fleet tracking system available that can not only record when drivers engage in risky behaviors, but also report to you about those behaviors in real time. This includes things like:

  • Speeding
  • Hard Braking
  • Weaving in and out of Traffic
  • Idling

You can also create reports over a specified period of time to look for patterns of unsafe driving among your drivers and to look for signs of improvement so that you can reward safe driving practices rather than only disciplining unsafe practices.

Active tracking of driver behavior can do far more to alter the behavior and encourage safe driving than occasional efforts by law enforcement to enforce safe driving practices and keeping your drivers driving safely can help you save on insurance costs, speeding tickets, public perception of your business, and may even reduce risks of legal actions related to accidents.
