In an effort to curb car theft, the National Insurance Crime Bureau has created an annual report that identifies the top 10 vehicles that are stolen the most in the United States. Called ‘Hot Wheels,’ this report showcases data that is submitted by law enforcement officials to the National

Crime Information Center (NCIC) regarding the makes, models, and model years that are stolen the most.

The 2016 Hot Wheels Report illustrates the vehicles that are most stolen throughout the country in 2015.

The NICB President and CEO, Joe Wehrle, said that the 2016 Hot Wheels Report illustrates that older vehicles are still the most commonly stolen; however, the report does indicate that there is also a high number of new cars, or later model years, that have been outfitted with anti-theft protection clearly shows that this anti-theft technology doesn’t always work.

How can motorists protect their vehicles from being stolen?

The NICB suggest that drivers institute the following four ‘Layers of Protection’:

  • Use common sense. Never leave your vehicle unattended with your keys still inside. Remove the keys and lock the doors.
  • Install a warning device that provides visible and audible warnings that indicate a possible theft.
  • Install an immobilizing device, or a ‘kill’ switch, which cuts off the fuel.
  • Install a GPS tracking device, which will help you locate your vehicle, and recover it, should it be stolen.

By instituting these ‘Layers of Protection,’ you can ensure your car won’t be among those listed on the next Hot Wheels report.
