NICB Reveals Motorcycle Theft is on the Rise

27 Sep 2016

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), motorcycle thefts are on the rise. This comes after a report published based on the number of motorcycle thefts in 2015 in the United States. The NICB is an insurance crime bureau that tracks data, performs investigations, and helps with public awareness of vehicle theft. Here are some interesting facts from the research study on motorcycle theft.

The NICB Study Data

The NICB report revealed that there was a total of 45,555 motorcycles stolen in the United States in 2015. This was up from the 2014 total thefts of 42,856 motorcycles. Between 2006 and 2014, the numbers were declining each year, going from 66,774 thefts in 2006 to just under 43,000 for 2014. This was a nice drop of 36 percent between those years. However, the number did rise slightly for 2015, though not nearly as high as 2006.

The Results From the Study

For this study, the NICB not only looked at the number of thefts for the 2015 calendar year but reported the top states where motorcycle thefts occurred, in addition to the top cities and manufacturers. Here are some highlights of those results.

California, Florida, and Texas top the list of states with the most motorcycle thefts in 2015, with 7,221 thefts, 4,758 thefts, and 3,403 thefts, respectfully. Following these states were:

  • South Carolina with 2,160 thefts
  • New York with 1,902 thefts
  • North Carolina with 1.866 thefts
  • Nevada with 1,408 thefts
  • Georgia with 1,393 thefts
  • Indiana with 1,333 thefts
  • Virginia with 1,253 thefts

The top three cities in the United States with the most motorcycle thefts were New York City with 1,340 thefts, Las Vegas with 1,042 thefts, and San Francisco with 729 thefts. Here are some other cities on the top 10 list:

  • San Diego with 717 thefts
  • Miami with 713 thefts
  • Houston with 517 thefts
  • Los Angeles with 486 thefts
  • San Antonio with 431 thefts
  • Indianapolis with 375 thefts
  • Albuquerque with 373 thefts

As you can see, three out of 10 cities were in California alone. The NICB also looked at the manufacturers of motorcycles and which ones tended to be most common among thefts. The results are as follows:

  • American Honda Motor Co., Inc. had 8,674 thefts
  • Yamaha Motor Corporation had 7,214 thefts
  • American Suzuki Motor Corporation had 6,065 thefts
  • Kawasaki Motors Corp. USA had 4,920 thefts
  • Harley Davidson, Inc. had 4,416 thefts
  • Taotao Group Co. Ltd had 2,757 thefts

Other manufacturers at the top of the list were KTM Sportmotorcycle AG, Astronautical Bashan, Jonway Group Co., Ltd., and Kymco USA, Inc. As far as months are concerned, August had the most thefts with 5,269 in that month, followed by February with 2,093 thefts.

If you have a motorcycle stolen, it can help to have the ability to track it with GPS. Before this happens, install a GPS tracking for motorcycles device so you can work with authorities to help track it down. It is also recommended that you have motorcycle insurance in the event of theft.
