Newly-Minted Teen Drivers Three Times As Likely to Be Involved in a Fatal Crash

21 Mar 2018

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reported a startling finding based on research conducted last year. According to the foundation’s research, newly licensed teenagers are nearly three times more likely to be involved in a fatal motor vehicle accident than experienced adults.

AAA’s research and statistics indicate that the summer months are more dangerous because newly licensed teenagers are out of school and on the road. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that deadly car crashes involving 16-17-year-olds are on the rise. They increased almost 10 percent between 2015 and 2016.

The three contributing factors most frequently cited in fatal teen crashes are

  • Distractions
  • Safety violations
  • Speeding

AAA encourages parents to educate their children about the real dangers of reckless activities like texting and driving, failing to wear a seat belt and driving at excessive speeds. Education, reinforcement and monitoring can help reduce the likelihood that your teen will be involved in a deadly accident.

Consumer Reports explains that concerned parents can utilize new technology that provides GPS tracking for teens. These devices can closely monitor your teens while they are driving, and they will keep you informed about the car’s speed, location, acceleration and breaking.

Each unit allows parents to visit a website where you can view your teens car in real time. You can set the devices to send you an alert in the form of a text message or e-mail when your teenager exceeds a set speed limit or other type of limit.

In addition, these devices allow parents to set up a boundary area. When the car goes out of range, the tracking system sends you an alert. These advanced devices will alert parents when a teen tries to disconnect a device, and parents can even request a detailed log showing exactly where the car was stopped and the length of time it was there.

Through GPS tracking measures, as a parent, you can help to educate your teen’s driving habits and remind them to drive safely.  And, it could save their life.
