GPS Tracking Technology Turns Local Business Owner into a Crime Fighter

This year so far, over 2900 car thefts have been reported in St. Louis, according to the Police Department in St. Louis. John Remstedt, St. Charles Grease Masters Industrial Cleaning company business owner, was almost another victim; however, it was his technology that saved him.
One early morning, Remstedt’s employees were working at the Cardinal Glennon Hospital doing some industrial cleaning work. They were loading up a van when in a matter of seconds, a person hopped in it and drove off. The doors were still wide open when he drove off, said Remstedt. He had a wrist band on which makes it appear that he was a patient.
It only took Remstedt a few moments to track down his van as well as the equipment worth thousands of dollars inside of it thanks to his GPS tracking system.
He says that all his company vehicles have live tracking GPS devices installed in them. He simply phoned the police and gave them the information on where it was. According to Remstedt, all he had to do is look up at the TV and he could see where they were.
He tracked his van moving up I-70 and worked with different police departments to have the driver stopped. The highway patrol did eventually catch up to him at the airport in front of the National Guard.It only took an hour after the van was reported stolen for the police to track it down as well as the thief inside, with the aid of GPS tracking.Although Remsted does equip all his trucks with GPS tracking, he says it has never been put to use like this case. It’s been more than a convenience that his van was returned, he says.
The man’s name at the time of his arrest was not released.
