GPS Tracking Helps Locate Stolen Ambulance

Medical staff working at the University Hospitals’ St. John Medical Center in Westlake, Ohio, were baffled when they discovered one of their ambulances had been stolen right from their parking lot. Staff first noticed the vehicle was missing one evening, so they notified Amherst and Oberlin Police immediately.

Responding police officers were informed that the ambulance had recently been equipped with a GPS tracking device. Officers used the device to pinpoint the last known locations of the ambulance, and they determined the vehicle was currently on the move. Patrolling Oberlin Police officers were informed about the suspicious vehicle. It wasn’t long before cops spotted the ambulance traveling down the road.

Police blared their sirens, but the suspect ignored them and accelerated down the road. After a short vehicle pursuit, police were able to stop the ambulance. The driver, a 33-year-old resident of Cleveland, was arrested on the spot and transported to Lorain County Jail.

Thankfully, no patients or staff were inside the vehicle when it was taken, and hospital operations were not impacted by the theft. The ambulance is now back at the facility. It was not damaged during the recent incident. Medical staff are appreciative of both the police department’s hard work and the GPS tracker technology that led them to the culprit.
