GPS Artist Creates Peace on Earth Message

23 Dec 2015

An artist known for his original message created with GPS tracking technology asking his girlfriend to marry him does it again with a peace on earth message.

Yassan is not new to using GPS tracking devices in a novel way. He is known as a GPS artist and displays his work all over the world. In fact, he holds a Guinness Book of World Records award for previous work. His most recent project was creating an international piece of artwork in the name of peace.

Yassan was able to create the international image by working with Japan Airlines Co., Ltd, as well as some of the other airlines belonging to the oneworld alliance. He was able to span 65,700 miles. The message began in Tokyo, Japan and ended up in Mexico. The message spanned 24 cities and six continents, and is one of the largest holiday messages ever done, especially with the help of GPS technology.

GPS drawings are created by traveling to different areas of the world and keeping track of the route with a GPS mapping app. When complete, it can show a drawing or a written message based on the path traveled.

The completed GPS artwork showed the word PEACE in an effort to promote peace and kindness in the world. STORIES, a creative agency, has produced a documentary and holiday card to show images of the journey Yassan went on in order to create the message with GPS devices and send the message internationally so everyone can enjoy it.

This came just five years after Yassan made history by creating the largest GPS drawing when he proposed to his girlfriend. This occurred in 2010, when he traveled 4,451 miles around Japan just to create the GPS message “Marry Me”. It took him six months to complete the traveling around Japan in order to create the proposal message. It included the majority of Japan, including the three islands. The message also had a heart design when he traveled around the island of Hokkaido, located in the northern part of Japan.

For his drawings, Yassan uses a GPS tracker to record the location data at each stop, which is accessed with his iPhone. The Saitama Prefecture-born resident graduated from Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music. He became interested in this form of artwork, known as geo-located media. His work has been shown all over the world in various media methods, including the Internet, print, television, and news.
