Getting Your Car Ready for a Summer Road Trip

22 May 2018

After months of Bomb Cyclones, winter storms and snowfall, it’s finally that time of year to begin preparing for the summer’s warmer (or hot) weather. Summertime is usually the preferred season to bring your family on an enjoyable vacation, so it’s important to use this time before summer hits to begin preparing your car for road trips.

Ensuring your family’s safety during your travels is a primary concern. You should always perform a basic maintenance check on the most important parts of your vehicle including the tires, oil, battery, wiper blades and brakes.

Confirm that you have an effective spare tire that’s properly inflated and a jack in case you have any tire issues on the road. All of your vehicle’s fluids should be checked including the antifreeze, transmission and power steering fluid. One frequently forgotten necessity is replacing your wiper fluid.

Many newer car models are key-less or have key fobs to help you automatically unlock and start your vehicle. Consider replacing the batteries when you haven’t changed them in a while to prevent getting locked out of the car. This can — and does happen, when you least expect it.

It’s wise to take your car in for a regular service check to verify that everything is running properly to efficiently get your car ready for a summer road trip. While this step may be seen as overly cautious, it could save your family from having a minor mechanical issue that leaves you stranded on the highway during what should be an exciting vacation.

It’s also a good idea to install a GPS tracking for vehicles. GPS tracking for cars can help you plan out the best route to take, helping you save on fuel costs during your trip. And if you’re the vehicle is stolen while staying at a hotel or visiting an attraction, you can swiftly learn its whereabouts to aid in its recovery.

Finally, fill your tank with gas and consider making an emergency kit to bring along with you. The emergency kit can contain extra waters, extra fuel, a first aid kit, a flashlight, duct tape and a map of where you’re going. Safe travels!
