Anti-Theft GPS Tracking Device Helps Catch Adderall Drug Thief

17 Dec 2013

Drug theft goes awry after a GPS device tracks down stolen Adderall medications.

In Scranton, PA, a drug thief attempted to steal the prescription medication Adderall from a local CVS pharmacy located on Moosic Street, but GPS tracking technology helped put a stop to it.

Adderall, which is usually prescribed to individuals with attention deficit disorder, is becoming an illegal drug of choice for kids, teens, and adults looking for a boost in energy and focus.

About Adderall

Adderall is a drug typically prescribed to children and adults that have attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) or similar disorders that cause behavioral disturbances.

Unfortunately, it is also popular among high school and college students because the drug helps these individuals focus, concentrate better, and reduce other side effects of ADHD. As an amphetamine, Adderall causes a number of side effects that make non-ADHD people acquire them illegally. This includes being more alert, high energy, invigoration and peaking studying or sports performance.

Would-Be Drug Theft Details

If it wasn’t for a pharmacist who thought to throw in a GPS tracking device, the thief most likely would have gotten away with the stolen Adderall. The thief walked into a 24-hour CVS pharmacy in the middle of the night, when the store was practically empty. He held up the pharmacist at gunpoint, demanding he give him some Adderall pills.

The pharmacist did as he requested, filling up a bag with nearly $3,000 worth of Adderall. At the last minute, he also added a fake bottle of Oxycontin that acted as a GPS tracking device. The pharmacy has these decoy pill bottles on hand specifically for theft purposes.

After the thief left, the pharmacist immediately called the police and informed them of the incident. More importantly, he alerted them to the fact he planted a GPS tracking device.

Law enforcement used the data to track down the thief at Neville Road and Route 690, just a short distance from his own home. With the help of GPS, police were able to track down his location through real-time results a map that showed up on their remote device.

The suspect is currently facing charges of drug, assault and robbery charges, since he held the pharmacist at gunpoint demanding the Adderal. He also has a charge of state police parole violation, since he has previously been to jail for similar charges, and is out on parole. A spokesperson for CVS will not release further details on their security.

There were customers in the store at the time and commented that they don’t believe the thief would have been caught if it weren’t for the GPS tracker. One told reporters,

“Being close to the interstate and all that there, nine times out of 10 whoever`s doing it they probably escaped without ever getting caught. I`m glad they got them caught though.”

This isn’t the first pharmacy theft was thwarted with a GPS tracking device. Another incident occurred in Philadelphia,  where a Rite Aid pharmacy was targeted by robbers who were interested in stealing narcotics. Here again, the astute pharmacist provided a decoy narcotics bottle equipped with a hidden GPS tracker.

Time and time again, GPS tracking devices, like LiveView GPS tracking devices,  prove to be highly useful against theft.
