IIHS and Consumer Reports Recommend Affordable, Safe and Reliable Used Vehicles for Teen Drivers

12 Aug 2020

Purchasing a vehicle for your teenage driver can be challenging. Parents often struggle between safety and price. Many families can’t afford brand new vehicles categorized in the TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ category. In fact, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducted a national phone survey that showed 83% of families that purchased a vehicle for their teens, purchased a used one.

Teenage drivers become distracted easily while driving. Actually, 16- and 17-year old teens have three times the chance of being involved in a fatal crash. According to safety advocates, this is why teenagers require vehicles with technology intended on helping to prevent or survive crashes. It’s extremely essential parents consider safety when looking at their budget.

Two large companies, IIHS and Consumer Report, collaborated and created a list of vehicles aimed to help parents find affordable and safe vehicles.

Criteria IIHS and Consumer Reports Used

The IIHS got together with Consumer Reports and created a list of used vehicles for teenage drivers. About 43% of vehicles are within the $7,000 to $20,000 price range and are considered the best choices. They all:

  • Received high reliability marks
  • Performed well in crash tests
  • Came with stability control

Each included “electronic stability control,” which became a mandatory safety feature in 2012. They also met Consumer Reports criteria for braking and handling.

Along with this, the IIHS also put the vehicles through six various types of crash tests. In the ratings, reliability was another essential element.

Tips Parents Can Take Into Consideration When Purchasing a Used Vehicle for Their Teen

  • Check for recalls when choosing a vehicle for your teen. You can look for outstanding recalls before purchasing used vehicles by checking the Vehicle Identification Number. Notify the manufacturer of the vehicle to be put on a list to receive notices of any future recalls. NHTSA also recommends you check its database every six months for new recalls.
  • Use GPS tracking for teen drivers to give them a little more peace of mind. GPS tracking for teenage drivers can provide parents with out-of-boundary alerts, speeding alerts and other types of alerts to ensure their teen is driving safely at all times.
