GPS School Bus Tracking Helps Ease Parents Minds

24 Sep 2013

Parents and children in Boston are no longer sitting around wondering where the school bus is, thanks to a new GPS tracking system being used in the public schools in the area.

Boston public schools are now using GPS tracking technology to help parents monitor buses that their children are on, not to mention easing students in the morning as they wait for their bus. It is all done through a newschool bus website that lets families plan for their day and know exactly where the bus is and when it will arrive. An added benefit is parents knowing the bus is on its way to school and when it gets there.

Parents and students are already seeing a great improvement after the GPS school bus tracking system was implemented. John. St. Amand, represents 11,000 special needs students in the Boston public school district. He has found that the other students and his own daughter have found relief in knowing exactly where the bus is and when it will arrive.

“It takes away the anxiety in the morning or even at night — it’s made my morning more peaceful with my daughter,” St. Amand told reporters.

The website can be viewed from any type of computer, including tablets. It is also mobile friendly, so you can watch it from your mobile phone as you get your child ready for school in the morning. It will offer only information that is necessary in order to let you know the estimated time of arrival. But parents can rest easy knowing that for privacy reasons, it will not show the actual bus stops or addresses of where the bus is stopping. To keep it secure, a valid student ID is necessary every time you access the site.

Boston is finding it incredibly useful, especially since 33,000 of the 58,000 students in the Boston school district ride the bus. This includes over 730 buses to 200 buildings each day. This is a step up from the hotline used just two years ago in Boston, where parents could call the number and find out where their child’s bus was. However, they had a problem when there was traffic or bad weather getting in the way of updating the line.

Due to the school bus GPS tracking success in Boston, Denver schools are also going to start using a similar system in October. Each student will have a pass that is scanned when they get on the bus, so that their parents can keep track of where they are and know they got to their bus safely. This is an important feature for the parents as well as the schools.
