Managing fleet vehicles for your business requires more than just proper training of employees, maintenance of the vehicles, and acquiring new vehicles when the time comes. You also need to be careful about pollution. The unfortunate fact is that with heavy fleet vehicles can emit heavy pollution. Luckily, advanced technology like GPS fleet trackers can help a lot with reducing emissions every time the vehicle is on the road.

The Dangers of Pollution With Fleet Vehicles

Emissions come from any type of vehicle, but large fleet vehicles tend to give off more emissions than other vehicles. Not only due to their size and the type of vehicle, but because they are operated more often than the standard vehicle. There are different types of emissions to be aware of, including particles, fumes, and vapors, which are created from the gasoline. They can be released from the vehicle into the air, including nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide. They are dangerous for one’s health and the environment in general.

How GPS Tracking Helps Reduce Pollution

There are two main ways GPS fleet tracking will help you reduce pollution: by monitoring how fast your drivers are going and by tracking and reducing their idling.

  • Monitoring Speed. The faster a vehicle goes, the more emissions that are typically released into the air as pollutants, generally speaking. This is why monitoring your drivers and the speed at which they operate the fleet vehicles is crucial. With GPS tracking technology, you are review their driving habits while on the road, including their speed. It not only allows you to track it, but you can get alerts if a driver reaches a certain speed, so you can contact them and ask them to slow down. Eventually, drivers will become accustomed to driving at a reasonable speed and it will help to reduce pollutants.

  • Monitoring Idling. Idling is another common issue associated with fleet vehicles and emissions. Since your drivers are likely responsible for deliveries or picking up inventory and supplies, they might leave the vehicle idling while performing these tasks. Unfortunately, this means they are wasting gas and letting more pollutants enter the air. It is much better to turn the engine completely off, then restart it each time. Unless they are only going to be idle for a few seconds, drivers shouldn’t be sitting there with the engine running. You can use your GPS tracking software to review how long and how often your drivers are idling — and inform them directly to avoid this habit if problematic.

Considering using GPS fleet tracking to reduce your fleet emissions and help protect the environment.
