GPS Fleet Tracking Glossary of Terms

The terms used in GPS fleet tracking and GPS fleet management may sound like a foreign language. To help you learn the lingo, here are some definitions of some of the common GPS fleet tracking terms.

Business Tracking.  This includes observing employees in the workplace through use of GPS monitoring devices and other tools, including keystroke loggers and hidden cameras. This process helps businesses reduce fuel consumption, monitor social activities, and identify employees who are off task.

Covert Monitoring.  Refers to the act of secretly monitoring the activities of a person. It often refers to the use GPS tracking devices that are used in order to observe the actions of drivers.

Data Plan.  Describes the monthly subscription for transmitting data using certain telecommunication or cellular devices. Mobile communication devices such as cell phones and real time GPS trackers must have data plans in order to operate. The costs of these plans vary greatly from one provider to the next and according to the amount of data transmitted during the plan period.

Employee Monitoring.  Act by the employer designed to observe or record employee activities on employer owned property. This includes vehicles, through GPS tracking, computer equipment, and even mobile phones. Some companies even monitor Internet use and block some websites from access on business equipment.

Fleet Management Software. Software that allows you to remotely supervise and monitor the operation of numerous vehicles and equipment belonging to your business or organization.

Geo-Fence.  A geographic perimeter inside which vehicles are allowed to operate. When vehicles cross
those previously identified and designated boundaries, an alert is issued.

Global Positioning System.  Also referred to as GPS, the term refers to a system of navigational satellites that make it possible to identify the exact location (by longitude and latitude) of the receiver.

GPS Fleet Management.  Using GPS devices and tools in order to oversee and manage the movement and performance of vehicles in a fleet. It can be used to track movement, determine speed, or monitor fuel consumption, of multiple vehicles simultaneously.

GPS Fleet Tracking. Refers to a network of devices used to identify the precise location of designated vehicles using satellites. The system can also be used to gather information about the vehicles and analyze their movements.

GSM. Global System for Mobile Communication. Often referred to as SIM card technology, GSM is a device used for digital telecommunications and serves as an alternative to analog communication devices.

Overt Monitoring.  Monitoring employee activities with their knowledge. This includes driving practices with GPS equipment as well as keylogging, video monitoring, etc.

Passive Tracking.  GPS tracking that doesn’t transmit location or data about the vehicle. The device must be removed from the tracked vehicle in order to retrieve the information.

Real-Time GPS Tracking.  Live tracking of GPS information and data allowing remote trackers to have access to the actual position the vehicle is currently located and where it has traveled. It is an invaluable tool for fleet management, auto theft prevention, and for law enforcement purposes.

Refresh Rate. The sampling rate, or frequency of locational updates that are stored by GPS receivers. Some people refer to it as a sort of “bread crumb trail” or “ping” system.

Satellite Constellation. – Term refers to the specific group of satellites (typically three or more satellites in the group) that are used in order to determine the geographic position of tracked items.

Static Positioning.  Taking multiple GPS positions successively over time by means of a stationary antenna in order to ascertain the average in order to increase accuracy.

Telematics.  A term that refers to the integration of wireless, computer, and mobile devices for sharing data and communication capabilities. It allows for real time tracking devices to transmit data effectively to users across distances.
