Tour de France Cyclist Performance Tracked in Real Time

21 Jul 2015

Fans of the Tour de France can now follow the race on the Internet and television for the first time in its history. They will have the ability to track the 198 competitors’ performance in real-time by using GPS tracking sensor data that is fed to a website from sensors that are fitted underneath the saddles of the competitors.

Data like the speed of the rider, their precise position on the road, and their proximity among other competitors are conveyed through this GPS tracker.

This type of intimate data is normally preserved for the teams who gain private access to it as well as private biological data like power output and heart-rate that wouldn’t be part of the feed.

According to Jeremy Ord, Dimensio Data’s Executive Chairman, the technology will enable fans of the cyclers to follow the race in various ways that they have not been able to before.

Understanding what was occurring behind the scenes of line TV coverage was difficult, until now.

Now, being able to follow riders and getting precise information on which riders are inside a group, what their speeds are and other data are only a few of the innovations that this solution will provide.

During the 3-week race duration, there will be a whole range of newer capabilities rolled out which includes a beta live tracking website, Ord says.

Developing an analytics platform made for processing this information in real-time will be challenging, he claims.

Out of the 198 riders, 42,000 heo-spatial points will be generated as well as 75 million GPS readings for a website that is anticipated to have 17 million viewers at a 2000 page request per second rate directed to the cloud data centers of the company.

Journalists and fans alike will additionally gain access to historical data of the performance of each rider over the 3 week Tour.

Better analysis of the race, each rider’s role in his team and the importance of their role for the sport will be all due to the top-notch technological development, according to Christian Prudhomme, director of the Tour de France.

Now, it will be easy to understand how to get prepared for a sprint finish within a few kilometers of the stage, understand the impact the wind has on a rider’s speed and much more, he says.
