British Columbia Officials Propose Tracking High Risk Criminals with GPS Tracking Implants

3 Mar 2016

A motion that was put forth by Councillor Scott Nelson to inject prolific and high-risk criminals with GPS tracking devices, was unanimously agreed on. William Lake, a city in British Columbia, is the first city to support this type of high-tech crime fighting tool.

According to Councillor Nelson, the GPS tracking implants, which will be injected into criminals that have committed serious and/or repeat offenses, will allow law enforcement officials to monitor these criminals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

While the British Columbia government recently announced that they would be outfitting these criminals with GPS tracking devices in the form of ankle bracelets, Nelson does not think that they are effective enough.

According to the Councillor, there are a number of issues that can occur with the bracelets, and these issues can make them ineffective. Nelson’s goal is to eradicate the anxiety that these high profile criminals create for his community, and in order to do so, he says that a more effective approach needs to be taken in order to provide consistent surveillance.

William Lake City has ranked high in crime severity in recent years. Most recently, the city was ranked at the top of the index for severity of violent crimes in cities that have a population that is greater than 10,000. The proposal for injecting criminals with GPS devices arose after a man held a teen at gunpoint and stole his bike in one of the city’s skate parks.

Civil liberties advocates say that the proposal is not constitutional. Michael Vonn, the policy director of the BC Civil Liberties Association, says that if the proposal was passed, it would quickly be challenged. He said that the idea of injecting a GPS tracking device into anyone’s body is not something that any Canadian court is going to agree to.

Though Vonn does not support the proposal, he does think that the reasoning behind it is something that should be discussed. She indicated that the very fact that a councilor has become so concerned about crime in the city that he would suggest injecting criminals with GPS tracking devices illustrates that the community has reached its breaking point.
