New Air Force Video Highlights GPS Technology Modernization
20 Jun 2013
A new video provided by the U.S. Air Force on GPS modernization highlights the biggest accomplishments and future developments of technology.
GPS, or global positioning systems, are known around the world. The technology was originally developed by the U.S. Air Force, a group that continues to pave the way towards newer technology.
GPS is responsible for everything from navigation to predicting natural disasters to GPS tracking of thieves, patients, children, pets, endangered animals, and vehicles. GPS has been the most reliable navigation in the world since 1993, with signals traveling at the speed of light.
Free for everyone and available around the world, GPS has become a critical resource for the infrastructure of the planet. Defense, military, civil and economic industries rely on the technology. A new video provided by the Space and Missile Systems Center Public Affairs and U.S. Air Force outlines what has been accomplished, and what the newest developments will be in regards to GPS.
Industries like maritime, aviation, agriculture, military and defense require GPS on a daily basis. Other common uses include navigation, improving the quality of life, disaster relief, time, weather, and emergency response. And it is only going to get better.
As the video outlines, there are many new developments in the works in order to modernize GPS technology. The next generation of GPS satellites will improve accuracy and include technology such as the Dual Frequency Signal, Safety of Life Signal, Interoperability Signal, M-code Signal (a defense signal) and more. It will also be developed for mapping, mining, oil exploration, boundary disputes and earthquake predictions.
GPS technology is considered a national asset, as it is used by over a billion people in the world. The United States shares information to other countries with data collected from GPS devices.
The U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard provide 24-hour maintenance and support of GPS signals. Modernization for this technology includes commercial growth, billions of dollars in benefits, and affecting nearly 5 million jobs around the world.
This new GPS modernization program, as you will learn from the video, is an ongoing project. It is a multibillion dollar project that intends to improve the segments, features, performance and signals of current GPS signals and capabilities. Civilian and military signals will be improved, with new features for everyone involved.
The modernization program began in 2005 and will continue its schedule through 2025. Transportation and Defense are providing joint funding to the projects. This video details what the future holds for GPS technology and signals, and what the amazing capabilities for it are.
