10 Technological Advances that Benefit Seniors

7 Mar 2016

Technology has simplified so many things in modern society. For the aging population, technology has made the world a safer place. From blood pressure monitors to medication dispensing systems, technology has made it possible for many senior citizens to retain an independent lifestyle within the comfort of their own homes.

Here’s a look at just some of the latest technological advances that are allowing seniors to live an independent, healthy and happy lifestyle.

#1) Personal Emergency Response Systems (PERS)

A personal emergency response system (PERS) is a device that connects the person who is wearing it to a call center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All the wearer of the device has to do is push a button and the call center will be able to notify a family member, an EMT, a police officer, a doctor or anyone else who is on the individual’s call list that help is needed.

#2) Personal GPS Tracking

Those who suffer from Alzheimer’s and dementia are at a high risk of wandering off, becoming disoriented, and may not be able to find their way home. Thanks to personal GPS tracking devices, tabs can be kept on those who have a tendency to wander off.

These personal tracking devices can be used to locate someone who wanders off, giving them the exact coordinates of their location so that they can be found and safely brought back home.

#3) Fitness Bands

Staying physically fit is vital for maintaining optimal health. Thanks to fitness bands, seniors can keep better track of their physical activity.

These bands, which are often worn on the wrist or the ankle, sync to a computer program and can measure how many steps the wearer takes during the day, monitor how many calories are consumed and burned, keep track of the wearer’s heart rate and more!

#4) Shoes and Carpets that Deter Falls

Recent research has shown that shoes with vibrating insoles can help to improve the balance of the person who is wearing them. As a result, the chances of falling are minimized. Though the technology is not currently being manufactured, there are hopes that it will be produced in the future.

#5) Home Blood Pressure Monitors

Thanks to home blood pressure monitors, seniors who suffer from high blood pressure no longer have to make regular trips to a doctor’s office; they can monitor their blood pressure by themselves at home.

#6) Socks that Alert of Edema and Excessive Foot Pressure

These high-tech socks were developed by a Danish company. When worn, they can detect and notify the individual if his feet are swelling or if he is experiencing edema.

#7) Medication Dispensing Systems

Patients who need to take medications on a regular basis can rely on a medication dispensing system. These systems are not only programmed to dispense the right amount of medication, but they can also sound an alarm to let an individual know when it is time to take her medicine.

#8) Smart Shut Off Appliances

These appliances are built with a sensor that can detect when an appliance is on but not being used and immediately shut it off. No more worrying if the stove was left on.

#9) Skype

Seniors can keep in better touch with loved ones who live across the country – or across the globe – thanks to Skype. This form of communication uses video-conferencing, which allows the users to see and speak to each other.

#10) Shirts that Administer CPR

Currently, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is developing a shirt that can sense of someone is having a heart attack and can administer CPR, if needed.

Thanks to these technologies, seniors can live healthier and more independent lives. It’s exciting to think what other technologies the future will hold.
