Must Have Items before Exploring in Nature

23 Jun 2016

Going on hikes and camping allow you to explore nature, from bird watching and sightseeing, to enjoying the great outdoors and beautiful landscape. While it can be a fun adventure, it can also be a dangerous one. You could get lost, run out of water, or get stuck in a storm with lack of warm clothing and food. This is why it is important to make a list of the items you need to bring with you before heading out on your trek. Here are some must-have items to take along.

Emergency and First Aid

Before you begin an expedition to explore nature, make sure you have a first aid kit and other emergency supplies. Some emergency items you need include extra space blankets, fire starters, flashlight, and cigarette lighters. It also helps to have a compass with a mirror to create a signal overhead that you need help. Bring along a whistle, knife, headlamp, and spare batteries. For your first aid kit, include items such as:

  • Different types of bandages
  • Medications
  • Sterile compress
  • Bandage tape
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Band aids
  • Gauze
  • Tweezers
  • Scissors
  • Gloves
  • Antibacterial wipes
  • Sunburn lotion
  • Burn ointment
  • Tissues
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Bee and snake bite kits

Clothing and Essentials

You also need to have plenty of clothing and other essentials. Bring extra pairs of underwear, lightweight and UV-protected hiking clothing, smartwool socks and sturdy shoes. Wear pants and boots to protect your legs and feet from bites, scrapes and other injuries. If the weather is going to be cold or this is an overnight trip, make sure to bring blankets and lightweight coats.

GPS Map and Navigation

You also need to have a way to track where you are going and alert someone if you are lost or injured. This is possible with the GPS tracking devices. They not only provide maps and navigational systems, but have the option of sending an alert to a friend or loved one if there is an emergency. You will be able to tell them you are injured and they can track you down. Also have a paper map and compass just in case the electronic device stops working.

Food and Water

If you bring no other sustenance with you, make sure you bring enough water. Bring more water than you think you need, just in case. You need to drink around two quarts a day on your own. Extra water is a good idea when getting exercise so you can avoid dehydration. For food, think of high-protein snacks that are easy to carry with you, such as protein bars, granola bars, and bags of nuts.

Before you go on your adventure, practice packing everything in your bag to be sure it all fits properly. Use your GPS tracking device to ensure it is working so you don’t get stuck with no way to get help.
