However, getting the donation dollars necessary to bring this clean water to the 800 million people in the world who do not have access to it, requires millions upon millions of charity dollars. Unfortunately, high profile cases of donor fraud have made people, as a whole, reluctant to donate without absolute certainty of where their donated dollars are being spent.
Now, with the aid of GPS tracking technology, Scott Harrison is able to provide donors the ability to see their donation dollars in action. Remote sensors allow donors to follow the progress of clean water moving into regions where there has never been clean water for drinking.
They don’t have to visit remote regions of Africa to accomplish this either. They can see their money at work from the comforts of their homes using smartphone apps or their own laptops. Schoolchildren can see the progress of their collected monies from the classroom and civic organizations can get accurate updates wherever they happen to be.
All this is made possible through the powerful combination of modern technology and GPS tracking. It’s a clever way to engage donors while also encouraging them to donate more, raise funds, and raise awareness of this global problem.
Harrison, former nightclub promoter turned humanitarian, understands that it’s important to give donors what they need in order to feel good about their donations — proof of the good work being done with those dollars. With that in mind, he developed real time tools for tracking that can be used on Google Maps or the Charity: Water website.
