New GPS Tracker Phone App Helps Fight Bullies, Sexual Predators, and Child Abductors

12 Jun 2012

A mother who was a victim of a bully herself as a child invented a GPS tracker smartphone app designed to stop bullies in their tracks and keep children safe from the antics of bullies.

The app, called Feel Secure, provides parents with peace of mind not only in terms of protecting their child from bullies, but sex predators and other physical threats to their safety and wellbeing.

Outfitted with a GPS tracker, the app can pinpoint a child’s location in a matter of seconds. It also has an alarm feature; the child needs to simply press one button, and the app activates a panic mode.  If a child is being bullied, threatened by a stranger, or being lured into a car, the panic mode dispels a high-pitched alarm, which also automatically calls family or friends.

What’s more, the camera will then automatically take photos every five seconds, and send them to another computer or phone. In addition, when the child hits the panic button, the phone automatically turns into a listening device. Not only do these features help keep a child safe, but they create evidence that could help catch a bully, perpetrator, or child abductor.

“It could save lives and provide vital info for police if a child is in danger of being abducted. But it could also stop children being bullied”, said director Wanita Burnett.

With the aid of the GPS tracker app, parents can have comfort knowing that their child made it home safely from school, even when they are away at work. A handy map included with app can show parents precisely where their child is at any given moment.

“If your child is a victim of bullying then you will know about it and be able to do something about it. Parents can check a map showing where their child is,” commented Burnett.

About Bullying

Nearly a third of kids aged 12 through 18 have reported being bullied in 2007 — sometimes daily —  reports the National Center for Education Statistics.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, nearly a third of all students aged 12 – 18 reported having been bullied at school in 2007, some almost daily. In 2009, the Indicators of School Crime and Safety confirmed these stats. Yet, statistics only tell part of the story, because only a third of the bully victims reported to a school official that they were bullied.

Bullying isn’t just physical either. Bullying can be emotional, verbal, and even occur online (cyberbullying). Homophobic, disabilities, racist, religion, and even physical appearance have all been targeted areas of bullies, whether the bully is an individual or part of a pack.

Unfortunately, victims of bullying exhibit a range of responses — sometimes even much later in life. These can include low self-esteem, difficulty trusting, aggression tendency, feeling isolated, and difficulty controlling anger. In some cases, a victim of bullying resorts to taking his own life.

Clearly, bullying is become a serious problem, and one that needs to be addressed. The FeelSecure app is just one tool that parents can use to help in the war against bullying.
