GPS Solutions Guide:
GPS Tracking Systems Basic Types Of Systems:
Celluar Network Based GPS Tracking Systems: These devices have GPS receivers that will receive position data from the US Government's Global Positioning System satellites. They also have SIM chips (wireless telephone chips) in them that transmit the GPS position data via a digital cellular network. The information is ultimately sent to a server where the GPS data information is received. Typically, these servers integrate the received GPS data, along with mapping software to show you a devices position, as well as other information.
The Benefits Of A Cellular Network Based System: The cost of data is fairly inexpensive, and service on major network providers is reliable. If you operate your vehicles in major metropolitian areas, or along most major roads and highways across the United States, you would probably want to consider one of these systems.
The Drawbacks Of Cellular Based GPS Tracking Systems: Information is limited to areas of cellular coverage. If you operate a device like this in a remote area, you will be unable to track/manage your vehicles, until they returned into an area with a cellular signal.
Satellite Based GPS Tracking Systems:
These GPS devices receive GPS position data from the US Government's Global Positioning System satellites. GPS information is transmitted back via satellite by the device.
Simplex Satellite Devices: Communication is one way - the device transmits received information out. You cannot remotely communicate with the device. i.e. The SX1 asset tracker is a simplex device, it is pre-programmed to report its position, but you cannot locate this device on DEMAND.
Duplex Satellite Devices: Communication is two way - the device will transmit information and can also receive information. i.e. You can locate on DEMAND in near real-time, a device configured on a duplex satellite network. Messaging is also possible on a duplex system. For example, a dispacther, who needs to communicate with a driver, and vice versa.
The Benefits Of A Satellite Based System: Coverage is worldwide. You are not dependent on celluar networks for your device to work.
The Drawbacks of a Satellite Based System: Monthly costs are generally higher than cellular based systems, since transmissions are all done between satellites, data costs are more.
