Everyone\u2019s heard of GPS, but have you heard of GLONASS and Galileo? In the world of Global
\nNavigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), all three are important. Below, we\u2019ll go over each of these
\nthree major GNSS.<\/p>\n
GPS<\/p>\n
People may often confuse GNSS with GPS. Global Positioning System (GPS), was the first type
\nof GNSS that was created by the United States Air Force in 1978. By April 1995, GPS included
\nglobal coverage.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
So if you\u2019re talking about global navigational systems in general, technically GNSS is correct,
\nnot GPS.<\/p>\n
The U.S. GNSS uses 32 satellites arranged into 6 orbital planes, each of which has at least 4
\nsatellites. It provides a positional accuracy of 11.4 to 25.5 feet.<\/p>\n
GPS was first developed due to a need for a private military navigational system. Only later on,
\nwas GPS made public.<\/p>\n
GPS operates in the L-band which is between 1 and 2 GHz.<\/p>\n
GLONASS<\/p>\n
GLONASS is Russia\u2019s GNSS and uses another acronym for Global Navigation Satellite System.
\nRussia (The Soviet Union at the time) began developing GLONASS in 1976 and there are 5
\nversions of this GNSS:<\/p>\n
1. GLONASS (1982)
\n2. GLONASS-M (2003)
\n3. GLONASS-K (2011)
\n4. GLONASS-K2 (2015)
\n5. GLONASS-KM (Expected to be launched in 2025)<\/p>\n
Global coverage began in 2011 with GLONASS-K.<\/p>\n
GLONASS uses 24 satellites in its space segment with 8 satellites in each of its 3 orbital planes.
\nIt provides a positional accuracy of 16.4 to 32.8 feet.<\/p>\n
Galileo<\/p>\n
Galileo is Europe\u2019s GNSS that\u2019s compatible with both GPS and GLONASS. Galileo entered the
\nscene later than both GPS and GLONASS, in December 2016, with global coverage since
\n2019.<\/p>\n
The Galileo system functions differently than GPS and GLONASS. Galileo\u2019s receivers use
\nsatellite technology and triangulation principles to track the satellite constellation\u2019s position. This
\nsystem is divided into three segments:<\/p>\n
1. Space
\n2. Ground
\n3. User<\/p>\n
Galileo utilizes 30 satellites with 8 active satellites and 2 spare satellites in each of its 3 orbital
\nplanes. Galileo is the most accurate with a positional accuracy of 6.5-9.8 feet.<\/p>\n
