As a parent, one of the scariest times is when your teen starts driving. Even if you trust your teen, know they are a safe driver, and that they will follow the rules, you can\u2019t account for other drivers on the road. Plus, even if you think they are good drivers already, they still lack crucial experience behind the wheel. Teen drivers are almost 4 times more likely to get in a car crash than drivers 20 years and older<\/a>, according to the Insurance Insitute of Highway Safety (IIHS).<\/p>\n

Although this is a frightening statistic, trying to keep your teenager off the road forever may be unrealistic. Furthermore, there are ways that you as a parent can ensure, as best as you can, that your teen is driving safely.<\/p>\n

The American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA) and the IIHS teamed up to launch a program to help parents of teen drivers keep their children safe on the road. It is called the \u201cNavigate to Safety: Roadmaps for Parents of Teen Drivers\u201d.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It consists of a series of guides dedicated to improving teen driver safety, including choosing the right vehicle, using safety tech, and understanding the law.<\/p>\n

Choosing a Vehicle<\/strong><\/p>\n

Choosing a vehicle helps parents and teachers choose a safe vehicle for their teens to drive. Not all vehicles are up to the same safety standards. So if your teen does get into a car crash, you\u2019ll want to make sure they are in a vehicle that is up to these standards. For example, you will want to choose a vehicle with a good crashworthiness rating and electronic stability control while avoiding older, smaller cars.<\/p>\n

Embracing Safety Tech<\/strong><\/p>\n

This includes learning about and adopting driver assistance and teen monitoring assistance. As a parent, you may be unaware of some of these features, as you likely grew up driving without them. However, there are many new technologies that can help you to monitor your teen and keep them safe on the road. Advanced driver assistance features include lane departure prevention, blind spot detection, and automatic emergency braking, all designed to prevent drivers from accidents.<\/p>\n

Provides resources to parents regarding teen driving laws. It also explains the benefits of setting additional rules on your new teen driver to keep them safe as they are still learning to drive.<\/p>\n

<\/strong>GPS tracking<\/a> for teen drivers can be easily installed in any vehicle so that you can monitor your teen and their driving habits. This is a great tool that can help with teen driving safety. Parents of teen drivers can receive alerts that show if their teen was speeding, braking hard, or even driving out of set boundaries.<\/p>\n
