{"id":678,"date":"2011-05-11T12:33:43","date_gmt":"2011-05-11T20:33:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveviewgps.com\/blog\/?p=678"},"modified":"2025-09-17T11:09:37","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T18:09:37","slug":"hardwiring-gps-vehicle-tracking-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.liveviewgps.com\/blog\/hardwiring-gps-vehicle-tracking-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Hardwiring A GPS vehicle tracking system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">Installing a vehicle tracking device is a fairly simple process when you have the proper information, and tools required to do the job.<br \/>\nPre-Installation Checklist:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">1.\u00a0 Determine the year of the vehicle, make and model<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">2.\u00a0 Locate your particular vehicle\u2019s wiring diagram<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">3.\u00a0 Have proper tools: Wire strippers, multi-meter, Phillips screwdriver, socket set, electrical tape, and soldering gun.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">4.\u00a0 Info Sheet<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">Determining the year, make and model of your vehicle is important.\u00a0 It will allow you to find specific wiring diagrams online for you to use as a guide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">A simple search on Google for \u201cvehicle wiring diagrams\u201d should point you in the right direction for locating your particular vehicle\u2019s wiring information.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">Newer cars and trucks electronics use what is called a data-bus system, basically this means everything is controlled by a computer.\u00a0 Improper wiring could trigger error codes that could affect the operation of your vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">That being said, you\u2019ll always want to follow the below guidelines when doing the actual wiring:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">1. Always, connect the ignition wire from the device to the ignition wire under the ignition column of your vehicle.\u00a0 Usually the\u00a0\u00a0 ignition wire is a thicker gauge wire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">2. 12 VDC constant connection.\u00a0 Can also usually be found right next to the ignition wire under the column \u2013 and again, typically a thicker gauge wire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">3. Verify your ground source, and secure the ground wire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">You should always use a multi-meter to test your connections.\u00a0 Be careful when using a test light, probing unknown connections with a test light can be dangerous \u2013 installers have been seriously injured and some even killed, by mistakenly triggering the vehicles air bag system.\u00a0 A multi-meter, on the other hand is safer, and will give you a true voltage reading at your potential connection source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">Soldering vs. The Poke And Wrap Technique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">Generally speaking, soldering your 12 VDC constant and ignition source wires are recommended.\u00a0 This will ensure the connections will not vibrate loose, or come apart after time.\u00a0 Another solid technique is the poke and wrap which is showing in the video below:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><object width=\"350\" height=\"199\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/v\/uZ3ZOqGHKAM?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">Info Sheet \u2013 For Multiple Vehicle Installations:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">It\u2019s a good idea when installing multiple vehicles to have an info sheet with the device serial #, fleet vehicle ID #, license plate, and other pertinent information.
