Vision Zero was originally implemented in the 1990s in Sweden, was proven successful all across Europe and is now gaining traction in major cities of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, <a href=\"https:\/\/visionzeronetwork.org\/about\/what-is-vision-zero\/\">over 40,000 individuals<\/a> are killed needlessly on U.S. streets. Thousands of individuals are injured. This is being called &#8220;suffering traffic accidents&#8221;, but realistically, traffic accidents can be prevented.<\/p>\n<p>Severe injuries and traffic deaths are unacceptable and they can be prevented. Safety needs to be the most critical consideration on all streets.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>How Vision Zero Cities Differ from Other Cities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A city needs to meet certain requirements to become a part of Vision Zero. These requirements include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The mayor must commit to Vision Zero publicly<\/li>\n<li>Vision Zero and a strategy have been implemented<\/li>\n<li>The goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries has been set<\/li>\n<li>Public transportation, health and other substantial city departments are on board and committed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The primary focus areas for Vision Zero cities are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enhancing cyclist and pedestrian safety<\/li>\n<li>Reducing impaired driving<\/li>\n<li>Improving road infrastructure<\/li>\n<li>Introducing safer car design<\/li>\n<li>Implementing safer speed limits<\/li>\n<li>Increasing the use of seat belts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To achieve Vision Zero goals, data is critical. Municipal fleets of vehicles play an essential role in Vision Zero\u2019s focus for eliminating severe injuries and traffic fatalities.<\/p>\n<p>Large cities, like New York City, are using telematics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveviewgps.com\/\">GPS tracking<\/a> for boosting road safety.
