The typical vehicle based GPS \u201cblack<br \/>\nbox\u201d contains the following:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><br \/>\nA GPS receiver and related components, which must receive signals from a minimum<br \/>\nof 3 geo-stationary satellites (4 if altitude data is required) simultaneously. An<br \/>\nantenna must be positioned on the vehicle so it has a clear \u201cline of sight\u201d to the sky.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><br \/>\nA processor and memory to manipulate the GPS data and provide for other external<br \/>\ninputs and outputs (e.g. telemetry and\/or message data), along with temporary<br \/>\nstorage of the data.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><br \/>\nComponents for communicating the stored data from the \u201cblack box\u201d which can be as<br \/>\nsimple as a serial data connector to plug in a device (a Palm PDA, or other computer)<br \/>\nto various wireless communications methods. Wireless communications employ a<br \/>\nmodem (a device that converts digital data to modulated radio frequency data and<br \/>\nback) and a transmitter, with a connected antenna. Wireless communications can<br \/>\neither be one-way, a transmit only unit, or two-way, a transmit and receive<br \/>\n(transceiver) unit. Depending on the one or two-way ability, the functionality of the<br \/>\nsystem is greatly impacted.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><br \/>\nSupport items such as a power supply\/converter, one or more printed circuit boards<br \/>\nto mount the three major components to, various leads and connectors and an<br \/>\nenclosure &#8211; the black box, in or on which all is mounted and connected.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><br \/>\nToday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveviewgps.com\/all+gps+tracking+products.html\">GPS receivers<\/a> \u00a0can handle from 8 to\u00a066 simultaneous signals, with more<br \/>\nsignals improving the accuracy of the position fix. There are generally not significant<br \/>\ndifferences between GPS receivers from reputable mobile vehicle tracking system<br \/>\nmanufacturers.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><br \/>\nThe type, capacity and functionality of the processor and memory and associated<br \/>\nprogramming of the units \u201cfirmware\u201d, vary a great deal. As in any computer system<br \/>\nit will take a manufacturer several \u201cversions\u201d along with several thousand installed<br \/>\nunits to reach stability and a reasonably robust feature set.
