Most Teen Drivers Admit to Narrowly Avoiding an Accident

8 Nov 2012

A recent study, conducted by Liberty Mutual and SADD, reveals that more than half of teens have admitted to almost getting into a car accident. The study revealed a shocking 68% of teens who narrowly missed a crash, along with more than 50% of teens who had a close call in the last year.  The study surveyed over 2,000 teenagers in 28 high schools throughout the country.

55% of the teens who had a close call in the last year say bad weather and unsafe drivers were to blame. 30% of them admit that they were speeding at the time, while 21% were texting and 20% were talking to passengers. 17% of the teens said they were changing songs on their MP3 player or car stereo at the time of the near-miss.

The idea to research teen drivers and “close calls” came out of focus groups. We were hearing a lot of kids saying ‘I almost did this, I almost did that,'” said Stephen Wallace, chairman of SADD.

A similar study was conducted in April by State Farm Insurance and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which found that 21% of teens in car accidents were speeding while 20% of the teens were distracted in another way, such as by texting or talking to their passengers.

As compared to adults, teenagers are four times as likely to get into motor vehicle accidents. In 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates about 3,000 teens lost their life due to auto accidents while nearly 350,000 teens were injured from accidents.

These statistics are a scary concept for parents of teenage drivers. But fortunately, GPS teen tracking can help ease their mind. Parents who use GPS tracking software for their teen’s driving behavior can help change these statistics for the better — and keep their teen driver safe in the process.

The technology allows for real-time data, including knowing the location of your teen’s vehicle, setting geographical boundaries that alerts you when boundaries are crossed, and notifying you if your teen reaches a dangerously high speed. You can also program the GPS device to inform you when and how long their vehicle was idle and offer you detailed information such as how many miles they drove, where they drove to, and a map to where they’re are located if their vehicle is broken down.

GPS vehicle monitoring systems exist to help parents understand how their children are driving and knowing they are being monitored causes teens to drive safer.

Additional ways to protect your teen while driving and encourage safe driving habits is to be sure they are well rested before driving, not allowing cell phone use while driving, and not allowing your teens to drive with friends in the car.
