SpeedGauge
19 Dec 2013LiveViewGPS is excited to announce the integration of SpeedGauge into our GPS fleet tracking system. This integration enables LiveViewGPS customers to monitor the speed of their commercial fleet drivers in order to evaluate drivers, monitor fuel consumption, reduce insurance rates, lower accident risks, and identify risky behavior among drivers.
Speeding and Fuel Consumption Statistics
Speeding costs companies in more ways than you may realize. From traffic tickets to higher maintenance and crash related expenses, speeding drivers present major liability and cost issues for the businesses they represent. Looking at the facts in black and white says it all.
Speeding Statistics
- Excessive speed accounted for 31 percent of all fatal crashes in the U.S. in 2009, with a total of 10,591 deaths, according to a 2009 National Highways Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report.
- Speed-related crashes have an economic toll of approximately $40.4 billion every year per this 2008 NHTSA report.
- The National Safety Council reports that speed was a factor in 27 percent of all fatal crashes in construction and maintenance zones during 2005.
- Every minute saved by speeding in the U.S. costs over $76,000, reports Caddell Nelson & Reibach.
Fuel Consumption Statistics
- Driving 10 mph above the speed limit on roads where the speed limit is above 55 mph, increases fuel consumption by $0.018 – $0.067 per mile, according to an independent, analytical evaluation of publicly available data from U.S. Federal Government safety studies, the American Trucking Association, truck driver surveys, truck equipment manufacturers, operational field data collected from truck fleets, and publicly available private research using SpeedGauge between 2006 and 2008. This assumes fuel costs of $2.00 per gallon and covers data gathered over the past 30 years. At today’s fuel costs the increased costs of speeding are even greater.
- A 2009 study estimated that SpeedGauge can decrease the operating costs of a large truck by up to 6.8 cents for each interstate mile traveled and 4.4 cents per mile traveled on other roads.
How SpeedGauge Helps Fleet Tracking Managers
SpeedGauge helps fleet tracking managers identify drivers with risky patterns or aggressive tendencies. It helps to pinpoint drivers that represent potential liabilities for the business and make disciplinary decisions accordingly.
It also helps to hold drivers accountable for their actions on the road, including the speeds at which they drive. SpeedGauge helps to modify driver behavior byreducing speeding incidents as much as 67 percent within six months of deployment. The result is lower operating costs of up to $0.025 to $0.068 per mile on the Interstate and $0.034 to $0.044 per mile on all other roads.
