Sanitary Company Saves More than 100 Gallons of Gas Monthly Using GPS Tracking

5 Aug 2014

Vehicles belonging to a Pennsylvania sanitary company are equipped with GPS tracking technology, and, as a result, the company is saving more than 100 gallons of gas every month.

The Franklin Township Municipal Society Authority in Pennsylvania is currently using GPS tracking devices on their fleet in order to save gas and benefit in a number of other ways.

The authority decided to deploy advanced technology in the form of GPS trackers after noticing that they were having issues with the trucks idling for too long, which uses unnecessary fuel. To combat this, the authority installed GPS tracking units on 6 of their 10 trucks.

Kevin Kaplan, assistant manager of the sanitary authority, said that he has already noticed the GPS trackers increasing efficiency and helping the company know exactly how long the drivers were at each location, as well as how long their truck idled for.

The GPS tracking device-equipped trucks included a pump-station visit and repair truck, the field inspector’s truck, one truck that is for lateral inspections, a dump truck, pickup truck, and a crane truck.

Following the installation of the devices in the Fall, the authority noted saving approximately $310 a month in the cost of gas.

After viewing the first round of data, officials for the sanitary authority saw a habit of drivers leaving the truck turned on for a long period of time. This allowed the vehicle to idle and use gas when the truck was not being driven.

When they noticed the trend, authority officials informed their drivers they should not leave a truck parked and turned on for more than five minutes. The result would help not only save the authority gas and money, but help them to do their part to protect the environment.

It was not uncommon for drivers to keep their trucks running during a 20-30 minute inspection without realizing, so the knowledge gained by utilizing information from the GPS tracking data helped both the drivers and the authority.

In addition to the benefits of using less gas and saving money, the authority can also use the GPS tracking device as a dispatch tool. When an inspector is called out on a job, the dispatch team can see which truck is closest to the desired location, rather than spending even more gas, money, and time on driving a further distance. This also saves the trucks extra wear and tear, and allows drivers to be more productive during the day.

As of today, the authority is saving hundreds of gallons of gas each month, which totaled a savings of $1,500 in four months.
