CBS News Highlights The Myriad Of New Uses For GPS Technology

10 Oct 2013

A recent CBS report about GPS tracking devices highlights the many uses for GPS technology.

Global positioning systems (GPS) have been around for many years, providing direction and navigation to civilians and military personnel. While most individuals use GPS technology for getting driving directions to a new location or figuring out how to get home after making a wrong turn, the applications for GPS tracking have been growing by leaps and bounds. Just about anything that moves can be tracked by GPS, according to this new report.

A GPS tracker device is now being found on just about everything, from tracking criminals to finding lost pets to retrieving lost golf balls. Here are some of the latest way GPS technology is being used as highlighted by the CBS News report.

  • Tracking Criminals. There have been many instances where vehicles, moving trucks, and farming equipment and hay has been stolen. GPS trackers are becoming beneficial in all instances.
  • Managing Employee Schedules.  Employees who provide delivery services for their job, such as waste management and package delivery, are now using GPS on their trucks and their mobile phones to allow supervisors to keep track of their whereabouts.
  • Police Chases.Law enforcement has developed a way to track down vehicles by launching a GPS tracker onto the back of the vehicle and keep track of their location remotely.
  • Better golf scores. Many golfers are now able to track down their golf balls with micro chip GPS trackers inside the balls and lower their golf scores through GPS tracking for golf.
  • Inside Clothing.  There are multiple uses of GPS technology on clothing. In shoes, they can track the person’s steps and location and help the blind walk more safely, as well as provide a panic button. In trackable school uniforms, they can keep track of students.
  • Tracking Personal Belongings.  GPS tracking can be hidden in your purse, wallet, or iPAD to track it down if it has been stolen.
  • School Shootings. While a GPS tracker cannot stop a shooting from happening, teachers are able to use them to alert the police and let them know of their whereabouts in the school.

Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the myriad of applications for GPS tracking. It’s also being used to help save animal species that are endangered, track school buses, help airplanes land more efficiently, help fleets operate more efficiently, and many, many other uses.

Local zoos and animal researchers are using GPS trackers to monitor movement and activity for the protection of animals going extinct or being attacked by other animals and poachers. Seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia are tracked if they wander from their safe, retirement homes. Parents feel more at ease when their children have GPS tracking in case there is an emergency. It is providing more reassurance, with live, real-time data available from a remote location. GPS tracking technology is durable, reliable, and helpful for a plethora of uses, as outlined in the CBS news report.
