U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy Award 5 New Contracts To Improve GPS Performance

18 Oct 2012

The U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy are gearing up to advance Global Positioning System (GPS) technology currently used for civilian and the military forces for both GPS navigation and GPS tracking and monitoring purposes. In an effort to improve existing GPS technology, the government has approved contracts to five different companies in the last few weeks.

Civilians and military have been using GPS technology for years now for a myriad of uses. For instance, GPS tracking is used to monitor a person’s whereabouts with comprehensive data in real-time, whether its to investigate a suspected cheating spouse or monitor a parolee whereabouts through a GPS ankle bracelet. For the military, GPS is used for a variety of purposes, including targeting military weapon systems.

Among the benefits military and civilians will see from the enhanced GPS systems are:

  • better tracking accuracy
  • improved navigational technology
  • reduced electronic errors
  • reduced jamming
  • stronger and more secure military signals
  • longer design life
  • better GPS receivers

Honeywell International, Rockwell Collins, L-3 Communications, and Raytheon Co. were awarded contracts by the U.S. Air Force, while Boeing was awarded a contract by the U.S. Navy. Three of the contracts were approximately $30 million, while the remaining two were $40 million and $14 million.

Honeywell International

Honeywell International, a manufacturing and technology company, was awarded a $14 contract by the US Air Force for improving GPS systems and the accuracy of the navigation system. The company is expected to complete its improvements by the end of March 2015, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Rockwell Collins

Located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the aerospace company Rockwell Collins was awarded $30,894,212 plus an incentive fee for their work on GPS tracking technology. Their work is to be finalized by the end of October 2014.

L-3 Communications

L-3 Communications has been awarded $31,882,577 for the development, research, testing, and engineering of GPS used for the military. An electronics corporation headquartered in Anaheim, California, L-3 Communications plans to be finished with the improvements and testing by the end of October 2014.

Raytheon Co.

The final company awarded a contract by the US Air Force is Raytheon Co. Raytheon was awarded $29,836,354 to develop the next generation of GPS receiver cards. Raytheon is a defense contractor located in El Segundo, California, and will complete its work on the GPS system by the end of October 2014.

Boeing Co.

The Defense, Space and Security segment of Boeing is located in Huntington Beach, California, and is considered satellite navigation experts. The US navy has awarded Boeing a contract for $40 million to research and improve GPS receivers, and reduce electronic interference and jamming with GPS satellites. Boeing has been given a two-year contract to complete its research and improvements.
